Interceptive Orthodontics

Early treatment, also known Phase One of a two-phase orthodontic treatment or interceptive orthodontics. The main goal during this type of early intervention is to halt the development of any negative orthodontic development. To achieve this result, the orthodontist must set up either a regular monitoring protocol or provide continuous treatment. Which of course depends on the patient and their individual orthodontic development. Using this type of proactive intervention will benefit the patient because it allows more effective orthodontic treatment.

What to Expect

Here at West Windsor Orthodontics we work jointly with our patients and their parents during early treatment. Firstly, we schedule an evaluation.  At this initial visit, we’ll determine any potential issues that may need additional attention. This may include tooth overlap, gummy smiles, and any bite concerns. It is feasible there will not be a need for immediate treatment, but most likely your child will require a plan for continuous monitoring. This is especially true while adult teeth continue erupting. If there should occur a need for treatment, we will work with the parents to create a treatment plan.

As each patient is unique, there are multiple methods that our orthodontist can use during Interceptive Treatment to address the following:

  • Preserve space for incoming teeth
  • Make room to avoid crowding teeth
  • Create facial symmetry by manipulating the growth of the jaw
  • Reduce probability of tooth extraction
  • Diminish overall treatment length of braces
